Main synonym = Anax bacchus    Hagen, 1867
Taxonomical Classification:  Animalia / Arthropoda / Insecta / Odonata / Aeshnidae
Lesser Emperor Dragonfly,     Sultan Sewdieni
Further Information:
A large and conspicuous dragonfly; can be misidentified as the Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) but it is distinguished by its smaller size and darker, less colourful abdomen. A. parthenope tends to hold its abdomen straighter than A. imperator. May dive into water after flying for extended periods of time, which may be a way to regulate temperature.
